Biscayne National Park Clean Up project Friday, March 28th.
Help us remove accumulating oceanic marine debris off Biscayne National Park’s shorelines. These special areas are home to diverse wildlife and are an important nesting habitat for sea turtles. The Rotary Club of Fort Lauderdale Cypress Creek has reserved Friday, March 28th as our project day. We will start at 8 am and end around 3 pm.
The day will start and end at the visitor center, in Homestead, Florida . We will enjoy a day out in nature in the park, and will be taking a fun boat ride to reach our destination. Once arriving by boat, we will start the beach and shoreline cleanups. Each cleanup results in about 500 pounds of trash removed. Work includes wading in waist deep water, walking over sharp rocks and/or through mucky sediment, bending down and lifting heavy objects, prolonged standing on moving boats, getting in and out of boats from waist deep water, working in buggy conditions, heat, and sun for 5+ hours and will be strenuous.
This experience is best suited for volunteers with a moderate to high level of physical fitness and balance. Participation is limited to 12 members, so sign up early.
After we finish the project, there is an optional visit to the beach café for a light bite in the open air, and the biggest hat contest.
