Weekly Meeting – Tom Powers, Dist. 6990 AG

Our speaker this week will be Rotary District 6990 Area Governor, Tom Powers

 

Tom Powers was born and raised in Miami and graduated from Archbishop Curley High School. He received an undergraduate business degree from Stetson University in central Florida. Tom served two tours of duty in Vietnam with the United States Navy.

 

He completed post-graduate studies at Barry University earning an MBA in 1992 and an MHA in 1995. Besides running his business, he is a Fellow with the American College of Healthcare Executives and was an adjunct professor with Barry University for 16 years. He is also a Past President of the Downtown Ft. Lauderdale Rotary Club and AG for Area 3 District 6990.

 

Tom is the President of Eagle Risk Management and Flightline Drug Testing, which administers Drug Abatement Programs for the Department of Transportation agencies such as the FAA Aviation, Federal Railroad, Trucking. His company also provides Background Investigations and Insurance/Risk Management services.

 

Tom has had a passion for flying for over 50 years and is a Commercial and Instrument pilot with over 8,000 flight hours. He is the District 7 Staff Officer for Aviation in USCG Auxiliary and also an Aircraft Commander pilot flying Patrols and Search & Rescue missions. He also flies USCG special logistics missions as Second in Command in a Citation Jet to Guantanamo, Puerto Rico and other locations.

 

Flying as a volunteer pilot for Angel Flight and Vital Flight and other VPO’s, he has flown over 1,000 missions in the past 27 years for those that need medical or humanitarian care. Many of those are veterans of WWII, Korea and Vietnam that travel to VA Hospitals for care.

 

He has run over 600 races and completed nine marathons, including the Boston Marathon with a best time of 2 hours, 45 minutes, a 6:12 per mile pace for 26.5 miles! Tom also competed in numerous triathlons, including the World Championship Ironman Triathlon in Hawaii in 1984 finishing 162nd out of 2,400 that included a 2.5 mile ocean swim, 112 mile bike and a 26.2 mile marathon.

 

Tom resides in Coral Springs. One of his two sons works with the NHL as a strength & conditioning coach and the other works in Tom’s business drug testing aviation companies for the FAA.
